What is a Sport & Exercise Physician?

A Sport and Exercise Physician (SEP) is a specialist medical doctor with advanced training in diagnosing, treating, and managing non-surgical musculoskeletal injuries, chronic diseases, and illnesses. They specialise in helping patients—from elite athletes to individuals with chronic conditions—recover from injury, optimise physical performance, and safely maintain an active lifestyle. 

 

Key Responsibilities and Roles:

  • Non-Surgical Care: Focus on managing joint, muscle, bone, and soft tissue injuries without surgery.

  • Exercise Prescription: Prescribing specific physical activity to manage chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and osteoarthritis.

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Utilising diagnostic tools like MRIs and X-rays to manage complex injuries.

  • Concussion & Medical Illness: Treating acute, chronic, and sports-related medical conditions, including concussions and asthma.

  • Multidisciplinary Approach: Often working alongside physiotherapists, coaches, and surgeons to ensure holistic care.

Who They Treat:


Contrary to the name, they treat individuals of all ages and fitness levels, including children, the elderly, weekend warriors, and workers with injuries. 

 

Training and Qualifications:


In Australia and New Zealand, SEPs complete medical school followed by at least 5 years of advanced, specialised training to achieve fellowship with the Australasian College of Sport & Exercise Physicians (ACSEP).
